Welcome to Plakias!
At the southest end of Crete, beginning from Rethymnon
and going through the unique beauty villages, you will
pass either the “kotsifou gorge” or the “kourtaliotis
gorge”* and you will arrive at the seaside village “PLAKIAS”.
Knows for its excellent, crystal-clears beaches with the
deep blue waters, Plakias is considered the ideal
destination for holidays. It really worth a visit to all
the villages around and try the traditional Cretan
cuisine. It also worth to visit the famous monastery of
Preveli, built in the 6th century, and also the-unique
beauty-Preveli palm beach!
*kourtaliotis gorge: imposing, narrow, with wild beauty. Its sides are
full with caves & springs. When the wind blows you can
hear sounds like handclaps-“kourtala” in Cretan
language- that’s the reason it took the name “kourtaliotis”.
At the far end of the “kourtaliotis” flows the river and
it goes near the Preveli Monastery. At this gorge there
is the church of St Nicolaus which really is worth
seeing. The tradition says that just when the Saint
touched the rock, directly water dashed from the signs
he touched with his fingers. These are the five springs
you will see when you will get down to the church. |
